We've lived in our home for almost 6 years now and even though it's is in pretty good condition the main bathroom always bothered me. Mostly because it's the one that was always being used and the one guests would use when they came to visit. Last year we decided it would be or 1st big remodel and I started my "Boys Bathroom" Pinterest board to get inspired.
I knew for sure I wanted some rustic finishes but also wanted it to feel elegant. It may seem odd to think of those two styles in one room but that's the best way to describe it. I love the clean refined look of marble but I also love the natural grain of wood. Rustic elegance... when you mix the natural elements with refined textures and lines. It goes so well together the browns, whites, and grays create a warm, clean, natural space.
Before I started ordering, I created many different vision boards with all my favorite vanity, tiles, paint swatches and decor. The winning combination for tile turned out to be a textured subway tile in white for the tub surround, marble hexagon tile for the niche and a "marble look" large ceramic tile for the floor. I chose all the tile after I had decided on the vanity, which is white with a Carrera marble top. I found it online at Home Depot but its currently out of stock. By the way if a remodel is in your future choosing a vanity is quite a big deal. You have to consider, size, color, material, and storage. Should you have a round sink? Or a rectangular sink? Does it come with a top? If so, are the holes made for the faucet you want? So many variables to consider. I read tons of reviews and looked through dozens of pictures, pins and posts but decided to go with the Newport style 36" in white. The vanity is gorgeous! The drawers are big and come with soft close feature. Its very well built and the marble top has amazing veining. The only downside for me personally was the hardware. Since we were doing everything else in a oil rubbed bronze I knew I would need to change it but it was definitely not a deal breaker.
I also ordered the tub and toilet from Home Depot. These items were pretty standard and I chose a one piece Kohler toilet in white and a cast iron apron style tub. The tub was probably my biggest regret of all. My thought was to go for cast iron for durability but it's not practical by any means. It was so heavy and difficult to put in place I almost wish I would have never brought it in the house and returned in when we had the chance. It's It's nice tub but it ended up being shorter than what I wanted and not deep at all. So in the next remodel I will consider acrylic or perhaps steel which I hear is lighter but more durable.
For the finishing touches we chose the Portwood style faucets from Home Depot. The shower head is beautiful in a square shape and has 5 different spray settings which we all love. For paint I wanted a warm gray that complimented the marble so we went for Repose Gray by Sherwin Williams. The lighting fixture we found at our local lighting showroom. It's a 4 light, bar style seeded glass with edison bulbs. The light is perfect for the bathroom and goes so well with the other bronze finishes. The cherry on top of our remodel is a wood framed mirror my Husband made. We mixed a 3:1 ratio of weathered Oak and Jacobean stain on some Knotty Alder. I couldn't have asked for a better color it turned out beautiful and was exactly what I wanted. Lots of love points for my Hubby on that one.
I was so nervous starting this remodel. I remember second guessing myself on design choices so many times. I had to take a step back and let it just come together. In the end I realized how much I love the process from start to end. (Minus tile dust on my dark floors) I have faith that my next remodel will be less stressful and just as enjoyable if not more.
